DHS S&T Digital Volunteer Program Guide

Hanscom, Donald H., Jr.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science & Technology Directorate (S&T) has released the following practical how-to Social Media Emergency Management (SMEM) Guidance Tool. The Digital Volunteer Program Guide provides step by step guidance on how to develop a digital volunteer program to support emergency responders.

The Guide was derived from the collection of successful practices and lessons learned from hundreds of data points, including  state and local emergency managers, public information officers, and social media emergency management (SMEM) innovators nationwide and the work of the Social Media Working Group for Emergency Services and Disaster Management (SMWG). Real world best practices identified during development are included throughout the Guide and all of the templates and resources are modifiable to suit an agency or jurisdiction’s specific needs.
